Biogas from "NAWAROS"
Energy derived from biogenic waste
In recent years, EVN has been increasingly relying on alternative energy sources, including biogas.
After being subject to a special treatment, biogas can be used in the same manner as natural gas, but offers additional advantages. Biogas is carbon neutral and need not be imported due to the diversity of domestic sources.
EVN is cooperating with various companies and universities at the Bruck/Leitha Energy Park to develop technically feasible and economically useful products made out of high quality biogas.
Biogas is a mix largely composed of methane and carbon dioxide, which results from organic material subject to oxygen-free fermentation.
A newly developed method involving membrane technology raises the purity of biogas to such a degree than it can be used, amongst other purposes, as a “Bio CNG” fuel. This concept, developed, tried and tested in Bruck, is intended for implementation at other locations in Lower Austria.
Since the end of October 2007, Austria’s largest biogas plant has been in full operation, and the gas is fed into the EVN network.
