EU Life project to protect the great bustard
Saving an endangered wild bird from extinction
In 2006, EVN started a project to protect the nearly extinct great bustard in cooperation with the Austrian Society for Great Bustard Conservation.

In order to effectively prevent these birds from colliding with power supply lines, EVN replaced approximately 31 km of overhead medium voltage power lines in the western part of the Austrian Weinviertel region with underground power cables, thus creating large areas that are free of overhead power lines.
Moreover, approximately 22 kilometres of 110 kV lines were marked with bird warning flags, in order to increase the visibility of the power lines.
Fortunately, the measures implemented have succeeded in increasing Austria‘s great bustard population.
